Glasgow based Children’s Theatre Company Eco Drama is looking for a Female Dancer/Choreographer to devise and perform in their new theatre production The Whirlybird. With funding from Creative Scotland and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, Eco Drama is developing a new theatre production titled The Whirlybird, in association with Platform. Set in a cosy birds nest made of willow, audiences aged 3-7 are invited to be part of the unfolding narrative, featuring dance, music, object manipulation and innovative puppetry. "A curious creature, ricketie-racketie on ground but in flight, a wildlife spectacle – a blizzard of wings, perfect elliptical twirls, a mass of orange and browns and a cacophony of sound!" The Whirlybird is an ecological ugly duckling tale about finding inspiration in nature, celebrating the differences that make us unique, and the wonder of flight. The set will be designed by Claire Halleran in collaboration with a willow sculptor, and the music score will be created by composer Greg Sinclair. The 2 performers will be ‘Bird’ (the dancer) and the ‘Whirlybird’ (performer, devisor and clown Caroline Mathison). The production will be devised between October 2018 and February 2019, ready to ‘fly’ in spring 2019 at the Puppet Animation Festival. The show will go on tour across Scotland in nurseries, schools, theatres, community venues and festivals throughout 2019. The Role We are looking for a dancer with choreographic experience to co-devise the movement and dance elements of the show along with the second female performer/devisor and director Emily Reid. A theatrical performance style and experience of creating and performing with and for children is advantageous. Musical/singing ability is a bonus but not essential. There will be a few creative development sessions in a local nursery throughout the devising period in order for children aged 3-5 to input into the show’s creation. The starting point for exploration during the development days is the juxtaposition between ‘Bird’ - a classic, graceful bird that can fly the nest, and the ‘Whirlybird’, a more clown-like, clumsy creature, that yearns to fly. A dancer based in or near either Glasgow or Edinburgh is preferable. The dancer must be available for the development dates in late October/early November, and the devising period in early January and February, and ideally the full touring period. For full details of the dates, application process and audition details, please visit the job advert on the News page of the Eco Drama website: For further information and to apply for the role, please follow the link below >>>
