TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CREATIVE BACKGROUND

We are Stills, a Centre for Photography on Cockburn Street with three floors dedicated to the enjoyment and production of photography. We first opened in 1977 on the Royal Mile and have grown quite a bit since then. Now in our 41st year we offer free exhibitions, events, courses, a free school for 16-25 year olds and most importantly a community of people that love photography!

CAN YOU GIVE US AN INSIGHT INTO YOUR PRACTICE AND WHAT YOU DO?

When walking past our front on Cockburn Street you might think we are ‘only a gallery’ - but that’s just the tip of the iceberg! We are open from 11am - 6pm every single day (except for two weeks over the festive holidays) and our production facilities are open until 9pm from Tuesday to Thursday. These include top inkjet printers, scanners, iMacs, darkrooms for film processing and printing as well as a resource library on the upper floor. If you’re interested to find out more please feel free to get in touch!

DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCITING PROJECTS OR EVENTS ON THE HORIZON?

We are very excited to show off our current exhibition with early works by famous artist Cindy Sherman! Our director, Ben Harman, will give a public Curator’s Tour on August 15th at 2.30pm which we invite anyone to join. Also, our Autumn/ Winter course dates have recently been launched with the first courses starting towards the end of this month. If you’re a Sherman fan you should have a look at the Summer School with exhibition inspired courses led by practicing artists.

WHAT MAKES EDINBURGH A GOOD BASE FOR CREATIVES?

Places for production like Edinburgh Sculpture Workshops, Edinburgh Printmakers, Stills that allow public access to state of the art equipment without breaking the bank. And of course Creative Edinburgh- the link between the many creatives that live in and around the city!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO PEOPLE THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES?

We believe in team work! A strong network can be the key to a fulfilling creative practice - don’t be shy to reach out to your peers, ask for help, advice and feedback.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT EDINBURGH?

That time, when James Clark Maxwell took the world’s very first colour photograph on May 17th 1861!
