TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CREATIVE BACKGROUND
We’re a group of seven designers from various creative backgrounds. We bring a combination of classic and contemporary techniques to the group which makes our work unique.
CAN YOU GIVE US AN INSIGHT INTO YOUR PRACTICE AND WHAT YOU DO?
We collaborate on experimental visual communication projects, primarily using typography. Our work tackles contemporary political, social and cultural themes, and is a reaction to the stagnancy of the current commercial design industry.
DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCITING PROJECTS OR EVENTS ON THE HORIZON?
We’ve recently opened up our studio (B12, within St Margaret’s House) as a gallery and event space. The space is hosting its first event, ’rubbish’ - a photography and design exhibition by Stephen Norman Young and Sylvie Docherty - from Aug 24th-31st. We try to exhibit our own work at least once a year and so we’re developing concepts for a new Blueroom show in October.
WHAT MAKES EDINBURGH A GOOD BASE FOR CREATIVES?
Edinburgh is well known for being a progressive and inclusive city. This paves the way for a regular influx of new talent who contribute to a lively creative culture. The Festival acts as a catalyst each and every year, bringing creative individuals together in a way that is incredibly beneficial for the city, both culturally and economically. Local artists and designers try to keep this atmosphere of innovation and excitement going all year long.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO PEOPLE THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES?
Take professional advice with a pinch of salt. Individual experiences can vary wildly within the creative industries so it’s important to try things for yourself. There’s no one size fits all.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT CREATIVE EDINBURGH?
Strength in numbers. It’s easy to become insular, particularly as a freelancer or even working within a small studio. Creative Edinburgh provides a space to test new ideas, discover new approaches, and find collaborators. This is ultimately how the industry continues to develop.
