CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CREATIVE BACKGROUND?

I’ve been fascinated by light and lasers from a very early age, and I guess this fascination has dictated the path my life has taken. Originally from Plymouth, I moved to Edinburgh in 1988 to study Laser Physics at Heriot Watt University. Alongside this, I was (and still am) very passionate about electronic music. After graduating, I wanted to explore music production more, so set up a recording studio dedicated to the recording and production of electronic music, from which a few chart hits and a lot of club tracks were generated. It was then a natural progression into the performance side, which led to the birth of Funktioncreep as an audio-visual concept.

CAN YOU GIVE US AN INSIGHT INTO YOUR PRACTICE AND WHAT YOU DO?

Since our inception in 2006, Funktioncreep has grown to become a multi-award winning visual productions team specialising in large-scale laser displays, 3D and 4D projection mapping, interactive LED & holographic displays, and immersive VJ sets. Just last week we were delighted to collect award number 7 for our work. We’ve applied our creativity to entertain, launch, inform and advertise, delivering over 500 bespoke productions for close to 350 commercial and private clients. We’ve worked on high-profile commercial rebranding events, 50,000 strong music festivals, campaign launches, keynote speeches, celebrity weddings and parties of just 20 attendees. We’ve broken records, too– the hour long Edinburgh’s Hogmanay show we created with Unique Events, Blacklight and Titanium Fireworks this year to launch EIF70 used no less than 54 lasers situated on Edinburgh Castle and along Princes Street. Each event is different, and it’s this variety that keeps us fired up.

ANY EXCITING PROJECTS OR EVENTS YOU HAVE ON THE HORIZON?

We’ve been invited to be the resident VJs at Creamfields this year, which is incredibly exciting. We’re also about to launch the new worldwide head office of a large oil engineering company in Aberdeen with an immersive 3D projection mapping and laser display. Towards the end of the year we’ll be teaming up with digital artist and fellow CE member Martin Sweeny for his second Paradigm Exhibition at the Biscuit Factory, and creating a range of interactive installations for various illuminated forest and Botanic Garden walks across the UK.

WHAT MAKES EDINBURGH A GOOD CITY TO BE BASED?

Edinburgh is an absolute melting pot of creativity set against a stunningly beautiful backdrop. We have exceptional educational institutions to nurture skills, plenty of employment opportunities across the Creative Industries, dedicated tech incubators to help business start-ups, great tidal movements of creatives from all over the world for our annual Fringe, Festival and Hogmanay celebrations, and a perfect networking platform for all of us via Creative Edinburgh. It really is a remarkable place to be based.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO PEOPLE THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES?

Irrespective of your discipline, push yourself to constantly develop your skillset. It can be pretty daunting working as a lone creative, so always embrace opportunities to work as part of a team. Get together a good, concise CV with examples of your work, and always allow rejection to make you more determined to succeed.
